Traveling to southwestern Angola is to enter a territory where the ancestral coexists with the everyday, where traditions still thrive amidst vast landscapes. For years, this region was isolated by war and difficult access, which has allowed many communities to proudly preserve their identity, untouched by the uniformity imposed by modernity.
Photography here becomes a language of encounter. We’re not just talking about portraying faces, but about approaching a universe of symbols: the Muila women with their clay-covered braids, the Hakaona practicing healing rituals, the Himba maintaining their semi-nomadic way of life, or the Nguendelengo , recognizable by their bun-like hairstyles. Each image is a story of cultural resistance and proof of the beauty that survives on the margins of time.
This photographic journey is also a life-changing adventure. We’ll cross mountain roads, hike among giant baobabs, camp in remote villages, and discover the colonial and art deco heritage of cities like Namibe and Luanda. All of this with photography as our guide, taking the time to observe, listen, and connect with our subjects before shooting. Only in this way do the images transcend the superficial and become memories, shared imprints.

Arrival in the capital of Angola.
Luanda is a fascinating city with a rich historical past and a beautiful bay, all seasoned with the typical flavor of its Portuguese colonial past.
After lunch in the Ilha neighborhood, we will take a domestic flight to Lubango, where we will check into a hotel for the night.
Overnight at Hotel AD
The second day will take you to meet the Muila tribes, starting with the Kamuviu community, known as the Muila of the plains . Here, we will greet the Soba (local chief) and you will meet his wives, as many Angolan tribes practice polygamy.
We will continue to the small colonial town of Chibia, where we will have lunch. Afterward, we will travel by car to the Mukuma area to meet the mountain Muila people .
Overnight at Hotel A.D.
Today we’ll arrive in Oncocua, an ideal place to meet tribal groups, as up to six of Angola’s most traditional tribes live here. At sunset, we’ll take an introductory walk through the market to meet the first tribal people.
Night at PC Camp
Today will be an intense day of ethnographic exploration. We’ll begin with a visit to the Tua , former hunter-gatherers who have become blacksmiths and goat herders. Afterward, we’ll head to a Hakaona village, known as the ” Black Himba ,” renowned healers and artisans.
We will have lunch at the base camp and in the afternoon we will visit a Himba village.
Night at PC Camp
Another intense day in which we will meet and photograph two tribes, the Cuis , a small minority of potters, and the Gambue farmers, who migrated 80 years ago from the Huila plateau.

After the final visits to the tribal groups in the Oncocua region, we will return to Lubango, stopping in Ontitchau for a picnic lunch.
Overnight at Hotel AD
Today we’ll descend from the plateau via the famous Serra de Leba Pass, admiring Angola’s most iconic panoramic view. We’ll have lunch in the village of Mangueiras, where we’ll meet the Cubal and Ngendelengo tribes.
Afterwards, we’ll head to the Mungongo oasis in the Namibe Desert. We’ll visit the local community, made up of the Umbundu people, and then continue to the Arco oasis, where some Umbundu families live.
Night at PC Camp
A desert route to Curoca and Tombwa, with spectacular rock formations and views of the Atlantic. Arrival in the city of Namibe, with its art deco architecture and colonial atmosphere.
Overnight at Hotel A.D.
Visit the last traditional groups: the Nguendelengo , a minority of pastoralists with unique hairstyles and raised dwellings. Lunch in Bibala and return to Lubango to catch your flight to Luanda.
Overnight at Hotel A.D.
Visit to the Miradouro da Luna (Moon Viewpoint) and the Benfica artisan market. Free afternoon in Luanda and transfer to the airport for your return international flight.

Early tomorrow morning we will arrive back in our home city, the end of our Angola Photo Trip
