At PhotoTravel we are always researching new destinations. In our desire to excel we want to surprise you and propose unique routes, which take you to places you would never have dreamed of.
This time PhotoTravel invites you to discover one of the most impressive corners of India’s most hidden: Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh. Here you will find a place rich in wild nature, a wooded area that serves as a home to various endangered species. You will also be surprised by its inhabitants and its peculiar culture, we are talking about the Naga ethnic groups, all with their own languages and customs.
On our trip to Nagaland State, we will focus our visit on the territory where the Konyak, the most populous Naga ethnic group, live. We will get to know the area inhabited by the Headhunters, the headhunters, who until the 60s were part of their fiercest warrior tradition.
The peculiar and characteristic ethnic group of the Konyak and their villages will be the main focus of our photographs in this first part of our trip.
Finally, we will explore the state of Arunachal Pradesh, where we will visit the ethnic group of the Apatani, also known as Tani, who have managed to preserve their ancestral culture intact, an example of survival of the old tribal civilizations.
Departure from Madrid to our destination. We will stop in Delhi, where we will take the connection to our final destination. Accommodation.
Early in the morning we left for the village of Mon, the northernmost district of Nagaland, bordering Burma. Once there, the following days will be dedicated to visiting different villages where we can take the best photographs of this inhospitable region and its people.
This area is home to the Konyak Nagas. It is impressive to see their tattooed faces, and their heads adorned with feathers. The Konyak are the largest tribe among the Naga and speak the local dialects that differ from village to village. Even today they decorate their houses with skulls, beaks, horns, elephant tusks and wooden statues.
Today we will start exploring the Konyak villages in the area. Our first destination will be the Longwa village which is located on the international border of Myanmar (Burma) and India. The most interesting feature of this village is the house of Anhg (“Land of Anghs”), which is located exactly on the border of Myanmar and India, half the house in each of the countries.
Along the way we will visit some other small Konyak village.
This morning, after breakfast, we will walk to the village of Wasa, a tour designed to see the life of the Konyak. On the way we will be able to see and photograph the daily life of this Naga ethnic group.
Today we are heading to the village of Hunpoi. It will take us an hour to get there, and once there we will visit the village and enter a local house where we will be shown their daily life and traditions. We will also visit the village of Wangla, where we will continue photographing the Naga customs and portraying their people.
After breakfast we will go on an excursion to Shangnyu, one of the prominent places within the tourism of the area. It would not be uncommon to find an old man tattooed in honor of his past ferocity in its streets. This village stands out for its wooden structure that was made in honor of the Shannyu people. It is said to be a celestial building built by angels.
In the afternoon we will visit the village of Chui, where you can still admire its traditional buildings, built with thatched roofs. We will meet with local artisans who will show us their skills and their works.
Today begins the second part of our journey. We leave the Nagaland area and head for Arunachal Pradesh.
After breakfast, we will depart for Dibrugar, the Tea City of India, in the state of Assam. Depending on the time of arrival, we will visit the mighty Bhramaputra River. His name in the Indo-European language is “the son of Brahma”. The Brahmaputra River is one of the largest in Asia, it begins its course on Mount Kailash in the Himalayas, runs through part of India and culminates in the Bay of Bengal, in the Republic of Bangladesh, in South Asia.
Today it’s time to get up early. Early in the morning, after breakfast, we will leave for our new destination: Ziro. The distance is long and we will spend the day traveling. Ziro famous for its pine hills and rice fields, is a world heritage city that stands out for its picturesque old town. But it is also the birthplace of a unique tribal group, the Apatani.
After breakfast we will explore the valley surrounding Ziro. We will focus our visit on meeting and photographing the Apatani ethnic group. We will visit the villages of Hong, Hari and Bula. To learn more about their customs, one of our tours will be a local market. The Apatanis have been inhabiting the region for the last few centuries and are recognized throughout the world especially for their women, who adorn their nose with huge rings and sport large dark-colored facial tattoos, with which they cover their forehead, nose and chin. While this is just one fascinating aspect of the Apatani tribe, what makes them even more interesting are their unusual religious, cultural, and agricultural practices.
Day visit to Hong Apatani village; Hari and Bula visit the local market in the afternoon.
In the morning, after breakfast, we return to the plains of Assam saying goodbye to the mountains and the Apatani. In the afternoon we will arrive in Nameri.
In the morning, after breakfast, we will start our journey to Guwahati. At the airport of this city we will start the return trip to Spain.
From Guwahati we will take the plane to Delhi and from there to Madrid.
End of our photographic journey through these unknown and fascinating areas of India.
