It could not be otherwise. We have been so impressed by the rich culture of Nigeria and the friendliness of its people, that we are going back to the Durbar festival. A unique experience that you can’t miss. The Hausa culture, originating in northern Nigeria and southern Niger, is one of the richest and oldest in Africa, they are known for their deep Muslim faith and a cultural legacy that includes music, art and architecture as the main distinctive elements. A notable aspect of their culture is the Durbar festival, an annual event that celebrates equestrian skill and loyalty to the emir. In the past, the festival symbolized loyalty and preparation for war, but today, however, it celebrates important Islamic holidays, such as Eid-al-Fitr (end of Ramadan) and Eid-al-Adha (the feast of the lamb). During the Durbar, participants dress up in colorful clothes and turbans, and perform impressive demonstrations of chivalry. This festival, which dates back to the 14th century, coincides with Muslim festivities and is an opportunity for the Hausa community to showcase their rich cultural heritage and horseback riding prowess. Its staging includes thousands of decorated horses, nobles in their best clothes, musicians and magicians who parade through the streets to pay homage to the Emir. A whole procession where turbans (Rawani) are a distinctive element, indicating social status and nobility. A fascinating background for a photographic journey. The festival also features the ‘hyena men’, who perform street performances with trained wild animals, such as hyenas and baboons. An event in which to photograph the essence of the Hausa culture, from the vibrant costumes, the equestrian demonstrations, to the traditional architecture, opening a window to a world full of history and tradition.
