A delight for photography lovers and for those who enjoy admiring the ancient traditions that still retain their purity intact. A trip to the Republic of Chad to enjoy and photograph the Gerewol festival, a unique opportunity to see a set of traditions that have often disappeared in other parts of Africa. A visually striking spectacle that retains its ancestral authenticity.
Late afternoon arrival at N’djamena International Airport, after the entry formalities into the country, check in at the Hotel.
Hotel Accommodation
After breakfast, cultural visit to the city of N’djamena, we will visit the Independence Square, traditional and artisan markets where we can take the first photographs.
On this day we must get the permits and registration to enter the southern area of Chad, bureaucracy is very slow in Chad.
Overnight in a hotel with breakfast.
Today we head south in our 4×4, with the help of our local contacts, we will try to find the nomadic camps of the Mbororo or Woddabe. On the way, with luck we will be able to photograph the Alidjam, a subgroup of the Fulani who travel accompanied by their spectacular and inseparable red zebu, or the Kanoumoudji, an ethnic group said to treasure the most beautiful women in Africa, whose charms stand out even more with their colorful dresses and the huge earrings that they wear on their nose and ears. We will also go in search of the Arab nomadic camps and their herds of zebu and dromedaries. In the late afternoon we will camp with the Woddabe, so that we can photograph the daily customs of our hosts, both at sunset and at dawn. A dream come true for those of us who like to travel the world with our camera around our neck.
Camping on full board.
Our adventure through the lands of Chad begins. We will learn about the most deeply-rooted traditions of the Wodaabes, a nomadic group that stands out for its devotion to beauty and for its manifestation of aesthetic fervor in its annual Gerewol festival.
Once a year, in this inhospitable land, a courtship ceremony is held, unmatched for its plasticity. At the end of the rainy season, several clans of the Wodaabe people gather for a week, after having crossed the Sahel on foot, on camels or donkeys with their cattle. Young men get up early to dress in elaborate suits, put on red ochre makeup, and show off their best jewelry. After hours of preparation, they will dance for hours in front of groups of women in the hope of finding the love of their lives. A ritual in which they will dance with their arms intertwined, eyes wide open and lips spread to emphasize how tall they are and how white their eyes and teeth are, sporting otherworldly smiles. They jump and bend in an attempt to mimic the grace and elegance of the long-legged white heron. Prepare your camera well and focus accurately because you won’t have enough memory cards to store so many photos.
After breakfast we return to the capital of Chad, we will take the opportunity to take the last snapshots.
Shower and rest in our Hotel and at the last minute transfer to the airport.
Early in the morning we landed in our hometown, the weekend of our Photography Trip to Chad, Gerewol Festival.
