During this annual gathering, the Wodaabe, a nomadic people of the Sahel, gather to celebrate beauty, dance and courtship through ancestral rituals that have survived the passage of time. Elaborate makeup, traditional costumes and hypnotic dances unfold on a stage that seems to have stopped in another era.

Departure to N’djamena, Chad.

Late afternoon arrival at N’djamena International Airport, after the entry formalities into the country, check in at the Hotel.
Cultural visit to the city of N’djamena, we will visit the Plaza de la Independencia, traditional and artisan markets where we can take the first photographs.
On this day we must get the permits and registration to enter the southern area of Chad, bureaucracy is very slow in Chad.

Today we head south in our 4x4s, entering the vast plains of the Sahel, where modernity barely touches the dust and millenary customs continue to mark the rhythm of life.
With the help of our local contacts, we will begin the search for the transhumant camps of the Mbororo, also known as Wodaabe, heirs to one of the most unique nomadic cultures on the continent.
On the way, if fortune is on our side, we may cross paths with the Alidjam, a subgroup of the Fulani famous for their spectacular herds of red zebu, sacred animals that accompany them as an extension of their identity.
We will also have the opportunity to photograph the Kanoumoudji, a people shrouded in legends that say that among their women are the most beautiful in Africa. Their faces, already dazzling, are further enhanced by their colorful dresses and earrings with large earrings that hang from the nose and ears like ritual jewelry.
Throughout the day, we will also stop at the camps of Arab nomads, where zebu, dromedaries and silences that say more than a thousand words coexist.
With the sun descending over the horizon, we will camp with a Wodaabe family, to share with them the intimacy of their day to day. It will be the time to photograph everyday life: the fire, the soft songs, the slow gestures of dusk. And, at dawn, the perfect light to capture that communion between humans, land and tradition.

We will learn about the deepest traditions of the Wodaabe people, one of the last nomadic cultures of the Sahel, famous for its cult of beauty and its aesthetic expression taken to the limit at the fascinating Gerewol Festival.
Once a year, at the end of the rainy season, this remote and arid land becomes the scene of a courtship ceremony that has no equal in the world.
For several days, the Wodaabe clans meet after traveling on foot, by donkey or camel through the immensities of the Sahel with their cattle. It is then that the young people prepare for the big moment: at dawn, they begin the ritual of beautification – they dress in embroidered costumes, decorate their faces with red ochre pigments, outline their eyes and adorn their bodies with sparkling jewelry. The transformation is total.
Then, with their bodies intertwined and their backs erect, they will dance for hours before the attentive eyes of women, seeking to be chosen as the most beautiful, the most elegant, the most desirable.
The dance is refined, precise, full of symbols: eyes wide open, teeth exposed, lips trembling in a smile that emulates the long-legged white heron, a symbol of grace and harmony.
A true spectacle of humanity and aesthetics in its purest form, where beauty is not superficial, but an act of identity, pride and cultural continuity.
Get your camera ready, clean the viewfinder, and make sure you have plenty of memory cards, because every gesture, every look, and every dance will be images you’ll want to keep forever.
After breakfast, we return to N’Djamena, the capital of Chad. The path offers us one last chance to capture the final images: portraits, landscapes or details that still whisper stories to tell.
Once in the city, our hotel awaits us for a well-deserved shower and a well-deserved rest, where we can mentally review the emotions experienced and the photographs taken during this intense journey through the heart of the Sahel.
After breakfast, we prepare our equipment and head to the airport.
With a backpack full of images, memories and emotions, our photographic journey to the Gerewol Festival of Chad culminates.
A unique experience that has allowed us to delve into the ancestral beauty of a people who continue to dance to the rhythm of their own traditions.
